They are needed for proper digestion and also perform a number of useful functions, such as preventing the overgrowth of yeast and other pathogens, and synthesizing B-complex vitamins and vitamin K. It is advisable to use a probiotic during and after a course of antibiotics to ensure that the balance of beneficial bacteria is maintained at all times.
